The primary obligations set by the government’s free boiler scheme are to reduce the country’s carbon footprint and tackle fuel poverty. In order to reach its targets, energy suppliers in the UK have been asked to help lower fuel consumption and reduce household energy bills by paying for A-rated boilers to be installed in qualifying households.

Britain’s leading boiler manufacturers have been working on innovative designs to produce energy efficient boilers. The next stage of the plan is to encourage UK homeowners to install energy efficient gas boilers. Under the Affordable Warmth Obligation, energy suppliers have agreed to install replacement boilers for free in households that cannot afford to purchase a new gas boiler.

It is anticipated that around 230,000 households in the UK will qualify for a free boiler grant. However, the government aims to support over 1 million homeowners in total. Thousands of households that are classed as ‘vulnerable’ may also be entitled to heavy subsidies.

Householders that are eligible for free boiler grants have no obligation to pay back installments. Furthermore, there are no complicated terms and conditions to be met other than the basic qualifying criteria. Households that qualify for a free boiler grant will be entitled to install a new gas boiler together with heating controls where necessary. An energy assessment will also be carried out free of charge.

The amount of funding you will be entitled to will depend on your income, the energy efficiency of your home and the age of your existing boiler.

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales and meet the ECO scheme criteria set out by the government then you might be qualify for the free boiler grant. Additionally, In order to qualify for a free boiler grant through the governments ECO scheme, there is a certain benefits related criteria that needs to be met. Your property must also be on a mains gas supply, the boiler looking to be replaced must be at least 5 years old and you must be the home owner.

If you receive the correct combination of benefits, then you could have your old boiler replaced with a brand new boiler for completely free of charge, or heavily subsidised. If it is less than 5 years old, the scheme makes an assumption that is more cost effective to repair your old boiler, than it is to have it replaced on the scheme.

Some of the benefits mean that you will qualify for a boiler grant automatically, with no other requirements. With some others you may need to have an extra qualifying component such as being responsible for a child under 16, be of a certain age etc.

Your current boiler is also considered – if your boiler is broken you can apply for a boiler grant to install a brand new A-rated boiler using a Gas Safe or OFTEC Boiler Grants installer. Finally, we can only help with ECO scheme applications for homeowners (however private tenants may be able to apply for the grant through other providers). By replacing your old, broken or in-efficient boiler with a brand new and a-rated boiler you could reduce your energy bills by up to £400 per/year. Think of it like this way- If your current boiler is 60% efficient and your new boiler is 90%-95% efficient, this means that for every £1 you spend on your heating, you can save 30p to 35p per £1. You can simply reduce your heating bills by 30% to 35%. By comparison, modern boilers are 90%+ efficient. This means that a new boiler will have wastage of less than 10p for every £1 which you spend. If you receive the correct combination of benefits, you could have your old gas, oil or LPG boiler replaced for free via the ECO free boiler grant scheme.

The boiler scrappage scheme was a program, which used to run and gave customers cashback for replacing their old, in-efficient boilers. Unfortunately, that scheme is now no longer available and applications are closed. If you claim certain benefits then apply for the ECO scheme.
